What is BangOn?

BangOn is a free score prediction game. Before each match kicks off, you predict the exact scoreline. Get it exactly right and you score a BANG ON — a direct hit. It was immortalised as a phrase by the RAF in 1943. Get the result right but not the exact score and you earn a small bonus. Get it wrong and you lose points, one per goal.

At the end of each gameweek, whoever has the most points wins. Play in private groups with friends, or compete on the global leaderboard. No money changes hands. No premium subscriptions. Just football and bragging rights.

The rules

1Predict the exact score for all the matches in each gameweek or timeframe — before each match kicks off
2Nail the exact score → BANG ON! Your first BANG ON gets +5, your second gets +6, your third +7, and so on
3Get the result right (win/draw/loss) without a BANG ON and you earn a +1 bonus on that game's score
4Every goal you're off counts against you. Predict 2–0, result is 1–3, means –4 on that game
5Highest total points across all the games wins the week
6Skip a week entirely without saving any predictions and you'll be pegged to the worst active score that week.
7Join any time — mid-week or mid-season. Just save predictions for the games still to kick off. Any you've already missed this week are recorded as nil–nil.
8For knockout matches that go to extra time, scores are based on the 90-minute result only.
9To appear on the global leaderboard you must submit predictions in every window of the competition. Miss one and you'll only appear in your group standings.

⚡ Scoring update (June 2026): 1. Scoring is now calculated positively, meaning that a higher score is better. It's easier to understand. 2. BANG ON bonuses now increase by 1 each time (+5, +6, +7...) instead of (+5, +10, +15...). 3. This change took effect before the World Cup, and previous competition leaderboards have been left unchanged. 4. It was felt that the old system was likely to give rise to runaway winners, leaving some people with almost no chance to catch up. The new system still rewards accurate predictions without being as punishing.

You called it. 3-1, straight up. No asterisks, no "well I had the right winner". The exact score. That's +5 PTS — and if it's your second BANG ON of the week, it's +6. Your third? +7. The streak builds.

Close But Close Doesn't Quite Cut It 😬

You predicted 3–1→Result 2–0

You predicted 3-1, it finished 2-0. You had the right result — a home win — so you pocket a +1 bonus. You were 2 goals out, but you get one back. Sometimes a point is a point.

The Optimist 🌈

You predicted 4–0→Result 0–0

You believed. You really believed. 4-0. A rout. You thought on current form it was inevitable. Instead it finished 0-0 in a game that was quietly, resolutely, aggressively forgettable. You were four goals off and got the result wrong as well. That's -4 for you. Next week, perhaps a touch more realism.

The Wrong Bandwagon ⚽

Everyone fancied the home side. Everyone predicted a comfortable win, 3-0. The away goalkeeper had other ideas, pulled off six saves, and the visitors nicked it on the break. That's –4 for you and the wrong result. Solidarity, though — half your group is in the same boat.

Deadlines

Each prediction locks the moment that match kicks off. You can update unlocked predictions any time before kickoff — change your mind as many times as you like. Once a game starts, your prediction for that game is final.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I forget to enter my predictions?

Any match that kicks off before you've saved a prediction means you get your prediction recorded as -1 -1. If you miss the entire week without submitting anything, you'll be pegged to the lowest active score in your group — so it's always worth submitting something, even a quick guess. It really does take only a minute or two. Just do it while your Mum natters on.

Can I change my predictions after submitting?

Yes — right up until kickoff. Once the referee blows the whistle, that prediction is locked. But if the next match in the current window hasn't started yet, you can still update those.

What is a BANG ON streak?

Every time you predict the exact score correctly, your streak grows. First BANG ON of the week earns +5 PTS, the second earns +6, the third +7, and so on. The streak resets each window, so everyone starts fresh.

What happens in extra time or penalties?

Only the 90-minute score counts. If a knockout match goes to extra time and finishes 1–1 before penalties, a prediction of 1–1 is a BANG ON. What happens in the shootout is irrelevant for scoring purposes.

How does the global leaderboard work?

To appear on the global leaderboard you must enter predictions in every single window of the competition. Miss one and you'll still appear in your private group standings — but you won't be ranked globally. Think of it as the commitment tax for the big table.
